Space Saving Tips for Your Outdoor Area
How To / January 15,2014With the size of the average home getting smaller as house prices rise and land becomes more valuable, space-saving furniture has become increasingly popular with homeowners today. And let's face it, is there a downside to having a coffee table that also doubles as a storage space, or a wardrobe that has a loft bed on top of it? The reduced amount of space in the average household is also particularly true when it comes to outdoor space, especially if you live in an apartment. No matter how large the space you have available, space-saving furniture is a great way to make the most of the area that you have available. To help you make the most of your outdoor area, we've put together these tips on how to save space:
Space-saving outdoor tables
If you like to entertain guests or just have a large family, it's essential that you have enough seating for everyone outside so that you can take advantage of the great Australian summer weather. A great way to save space with seating is to buy an outdoor dining room table where the seats can be stored completely out of the way by fitting under the table. This eliminates the need to edge around bulky chair backs and legs when the table is not in use.
Vertical gardens
If you don't have enough room in the patio, balcony or yard area of your home to plant a proper garden bed, why not try creating your very own vertical garden? A great way to do this is to use two or more stepladders and place pot plants on each rung. This way only a small amount of surface area is taken up but you have the effect of plants climbing up the ladder. Planting climbing vines on a trellis is also an easy way to begin your own vertical garden to add some greenery to your outdoor area.
Double-duty items
Use garden items like pots for both storage and another purpose. For example, you could use a flower pot with a inverted lid as both storage for your garden hose and as a bird bath, so that it looks pretty and serves a functional purpose.
Trick the eye
A great way to make a garden area look bigger is to place a large mirror on a wall or fence and place a lattice frame in front of it. This way, your garden area is reflected in the mirror when people look at it but because of the lattice frame guests will only realise that it is a reflection if they look at it closely. This will give those in the garden an illusion of space that isn't actually there.
With these simple tips you can make even the smallest outdoor area perfect for entertaining guests over the warmer months of the year, giving you extra living space around your home.
